Saturday Short – Banter

Since this is the blog’s first Saturday Short, a little explanation might be in order.

Inspired by the last glimmerings of a dream, I wrote this week’s short short story in one day of feverish writing … and rewriting … and rewriting.

I was thinking about New Year’s resolutions at the time (this happened during the last week of 2010) and decided that I would try to post a short story every week of 2011, of at least 1102 words to mirror the year.

Some few of these might be re-releases, or “modular” short stories that are part of a larger work-in-progress, or finally hashed out versions of a half-dozen-or-so short stories that are sitting partly finished in my For Later bin, but by necessity I will have to write most of them from scratch.

One warning to readers: as those familiar with my writing know, I tend to push the edges of anything that might be considered a “personal style.”  Some of stories are driven by plot, others by mood, or by character, by dialogue and voice.  The stories are likely to be all over the place, genre-wise, as well.  If you like writers whose new stories are as familiar as a favorite chair, following this series might not be for you; as I writer, I’m more like a house with a hundred chambers than a comfy sitting room.

But, we’ll see how it goes!  For this first week of 2011, enjoy the first episode of my new Saturday Short series, “Banter.”
