Music Monday – The Ocean Roll

You might have noticed a sea-related theme in a lot of my writing, whether songwriting, poetry, or fiction.

This tune, a classic lamentation and apotheosis of the sea, dips into several West Indies traditions for its style.

i done lost sight of the world i know
_i can’t see far in the way i go
__it’s one day fast and one day too slow
___i can’t believe how far i’ve come

i lost my grip on everything that’s mine
_i look around but there’s no way to find
__i try to recover, but there’s just no sign
___i can’t believe what i left behind

the Ocean roll, and roll the tears down on my face
the Ocean stole, and what She took i can’t replace
the Ocean’s cold and angry and so stuck in Her ways
the Ocean winds blow and i’m lost without a trace
