The Ligan Images – Part II

Following up on the first installment of images that inspired the world of Ligan, and were used as graphics in the original online draft, here are more (modified) images with their original titles and artists identified.

You may notice that this set also has an unidentified painting at the end; my original file-naming system was laughable.  If you can help pin down the original title and artist, it would be greatly appreciated!

Queries Away!

LiganStoneYesterday, 13 October 2009, was the day I sent out the first of what will likely be dozens of queries to literary agents (if all the warnings about preparing for repeated rejection have been warranted) for my novel The Ligan of the Disomus.

Was it nerve-wracking?  Not really, since I am fairly confident it will eventually be picked up by someone.

Was it exciting?  Not nearly as exciting as finishing the novel.

More than anything else, I felt like I was keeping a promise to the characters themselves, and to all the people who have been nice enough to read and provide feedback on the story, from members of the original workshop at WVSU, including moderator Denise Giardina, to various online commenters and Ligan‘s 100+ Facebook fans, and finally my friends (in alphabetical order) Amaya, Karen, Meriq, Neil, Shanta, and Veda.

If I have forgotten anyone, feel free to lob a bottle of rum at my head.

I’ll keep you posted on developments as they occur!

More Legendarium

LiganStoneMore entries, and a few expansions on existing entries, have been added to the Observer’s Gloss, which is now up to 6100 words.  (Yeah, getting serious about getting published makes you start paying attention to things like that.)

There’s a lot of new material since the last posted update, much of it the result of fleshing out the rough outlines of the next three books: background material that doesn’t seem likely to come up in the plotlines of those novels has been worked up as Gloss entries.  This is the origin of the Amberton Compromise Crisis, Royal Beasts, Drille, Hillfort Philippson, Straylings, and the Ashcraft family entries.

A few expansions were added to clarify pronunciations, as I recognized that the way I was pronouncing them in my head might not be apparent from the spelling: Breuksted, Nancycomb, and Deburotte.  And, speaking of place names, multiple places (primarily Republics and cities) have been added.

Finally, many of the new entries are simply to expand on things mentioned in Ligan, like shoak, the Security Corps, the Purser Corps, Prelatarianism, lolly oakweed, the Lighterman’s Union, and blowflower.

Likely future additions: Pulpy Cat, General Cabinet, Lowan & Showan, Great Valley, Grand Caucus, elefas, Common Court, the Peerage, Deborah, St. Tanna, St. Geoffrey, and Blickers.

The Ligan Images – Part 1

Now that I’ve taken down most of The Ligan of the Disomus from the blog, and password-protected the second and third chapters, the paintings that complement(ed) the chapters and sections are inaccessible.

Until now! (See below.) Read more »

Catching Up – Stepping Back

It has been a while since I actually wrote a post for the blog; this entry is the “catching up” part.  After I began fleshing out Chapter 8 of Ligan, I put the TOC page up as a splash and concentrated on polishing up the novel.

But the draft of Ligan has been complete since July* and I’ve been researching literary agents, reading advice on the querying process, working up a synopsis (pain-ful), and writing and outlining the sequel(s).

Also, I took down the TOC splash in order to go back to regular blog posts; that’s the “stepping back” part.

The complete draft has been translated to Word format for submission, and what you see here is the initial draft before several significant additions, edits, cuts, and rearrangements.

Actually, you can only see that here if you have the passwords, which most of you don’t.   The password to Chapters 2 and 3 (yeah, I know these were public earlier, but this is business time now) I might be persuaded to reveal to interested readers/critics who show insight into the writing.

I will keep you posted on the progress of the querying process.

IN OTHER NEWS

The poetry pages have been consolidated as a single page, simply to clean up the blog.  After writing “Storming” earlier this year, I felt a bridge had been crossed and likely will not be writing poetry in the future.

Also, due to problems with my web hosting service and their ever-shifting file manager (which inexplicably changes public access permissions and invalidates .htaccess files) the music previously available here is now, enragingly, unavailable.  Multiple conversations with tech support have resulted only in having my intelligence repeatedly insulted while tech support’s lack of intelligence and listening skills were repeatedly demonstrated.

I won’t mention the soon-to-be-former web hosting service here, but I will say:

  1. They do not deserve the grade that their name implies.
  2. I am choosing between JustHost and GoDaddy as a replacement.  Any advice?

* Inasmuch as a writer—particularly a writer who has also been an editor—will accept that a piece of writing is ever “complete.”

Ligan Chapter 7 Posted

Chapter 7 of The Ligan of the Disomus, “Walking Over Open Water,” is now up.  (See the sidebar.)

My apologies for not posting Chapter 8.  Some end notes may be forthcoming.
